Best Tiny Homes and Cabins with Character

Updated: Jun 14, 2021

A little bit of the eclectic in a tiny home or cabin goes a long way, especially in our area, the Byron Bay Hinterland, NSW, Australia. If you are investing in a tiny home to live or buying one as an invesment, it's great to have a bit of character. Whether you go for a completely custom built tiny home, or just want to invest in a little creative flair here or there, you'll need some inspiration... So here is our pick of the best tiny homes and cabins, filled with character. We hope you enjoy this bit of fun, and that it gets your imagination running wild!

Tiny Home on Wheels: The Ark by Zyl Vandos

This reminds me of my set building days! Did you see the movie Thor Ragnarok? I was part of that team who built the city of Asgard. Oh the beautiful and crazy angles that job required me to mull over! Not to mention the full scale spaceship I needed to build from ply! However, I digress…. I just love the lines of this beautiful tiny home, the artistry and the natural cladding.

Caravan Makeover: The Dixie Daisy - Texas

Why this one? I just love, that anyone can do this. Honestly, why not make the most of a caravan, tiny home or bus on your property? The deck leads down to a hot tub and outdoor shower. The caravan can move in and out, but when its home, it is truly home. It has its place of belonging on the property, and of course, no DA hiccups likely for a project like this. A little deck goes a long way.

Tiny Home on Wheels: The Nautilus, Byron Bay Hinterland, NSW Australia

This beautiful creation was actually made by one of my best mates (we are creative folk around here!) It sits permanently on a trailer base, disguised by the simple front deck. With such a modest appearance of size from the outside, you wouldn't likely guess that it has a fully functional kitchen and living space, bathroom and bedroom on the second floor. And what's up there on that rooftop deck? A bath of course, for romantic stargazing!

The Nautilus has already traveled half way across Australia. It's light and bright, with features of silky oak, cedar and a wonderful mix of reclaimed hardwoods.

Permanent Cabin: Glass Yurt - Finland

Maybe its because I recently built a yurt for a client, but I just love the geometry of the roofline in a build like this. In the area where we live, a build like this, even with its beautiful heat proof glass is totally impractical, you’d cook with our soaring temperatures in Summer!

But when you put this gorgeous build in its context, a cabin in Finland, where you can see the stars and the northern lights… then you get a very different picture indeed. Pure magic.

Glamping Pods: Falcon Forest Glamping - UK

I can just imagine these little pods dotted all over the properties where we live, so much nicer than a square box, I know where I’d stay! What a great way to make a camping ground stand out. These are just big enough to fit a queen bed with loads of headroom, all you need when you’re camping really.

Its just that little bit of character, built into a tiny home or cabin, that makes it truly inspiring. These examples are a far cry from your regular backyard pod, they are a source for the imagination to run wild and while you may not go fully wild with your own build, its nice to consider something outside of your regular box.

We’ll keep you updated on all our exciting builds as they progress. If you haven’t seen our projects yet, click here.
